Help Create our Future

NOTEworthy, our staged reading series, was established to foster relationships with playwrights as they develop new works. The playwrights attend stage readings of their plays and then participate in a talkback with the cast and audience, giving them an opportunity to make revisions based on this feedback. This is your chance to be an active participant in the playwriting process!

“Shelter”
by
Lisa Kenner
Directed by Aaron Henne
Monday and Tuesday, July 21st and 22nd at 7:30 pm

Will is in love with Lily. Lily is in love with Will. But when Will takes Lily home to “meet the parents,” their romance is suddenly thrust against the backdrop of family dysfunction. Love takes a wrong turn down a dark and forbidden path that challenges the very nature of love, family, and the concept of home. Can love survive? Is there any place one can truly call "home"?

LISA KENNER (Playwright) is an LA-based writer and producer. She is a member of Theatre of NOTE and The Robey Theatre Company Playwrights Lab, where SHELTER was originally developed. Her short film “The Ring” is being shot in Los Angeles this summer and her short play “A Terminal Affair” has been produced in several 10-minute play festivals. Lisa’s theatre producing credits include: “He Asked For It” and “Red Light, Green Light” (Ovation nominee), both for Theatre of NOTE; “The Maids” (4 NAACP nominations), “Tape,” and the Los Angeles History Project (2003-2004). Lisa spends her days as Director of Marketing for We Tell Stories, LA’s renowned children’s storytelling theatre company. She is a native of Boston and a graduate of Wesleyan University.

AARON HENNE (Director) is the Co-Literary Manager for The Theatre at Boston Court and the resident playwright for Son of Semele Ensemble, which has produced “King Cat Calico Finally Flies Free!” His play, “Sliding into Hades,” received the 2008 LA Weekly Awards for Playwriting and Production of The Year. He has served in script development capacities for Culture Clash, The Mark Taper Forum, The Colony Theatre and The Theatre @ Boston Court (Cold Tender/Pera Palas). Aaron was a finalist for The Jerome and The Juilliard Fellowships in Playwriting, as well as Center Theatre Group's Sherwood Award. He teaches Playwriting at the Robey Theatre Company and runs the writer's studio, Wordstrut.
